
Ancient Mediterranean Studies Major
The Ancient Mediterranean Studies major at UNC Greensboro explores the civilizations, archaeology, languages, and literature of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Students may choose from four concentrations: Classical Civilization, Classical Archaeology, Classical Language and Literature, or Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations.
By studying the Ancient Mediterranean, you develop an advanced ability to communicate and think critically, while receiving excellent preparation for graduate entrance exams for medical, law, and other professional programs.
Our program offers undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors, as well as an archaeological field school in Greece and a faculty-led short-term study abroad program in Rome. You take fascinating courses in mythology, cosmology, archaeology, ancient warfare, women in antiquity, and many more.

The Classical Civilization concentration allows you to focus your studies on the cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean region.

The Classical Archaeology concentration allows you to focus your studies on the investigation of artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome.

The Classical Language and Literature concentration allows you to focus your studies on the translation and literary analysis of ancient Greek and Latin texts.

The Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations concentration explores the cultures, literature, and archaeology of the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world with a focus on Greece and Rome.

Archaeology Program
Study past civilizations and cultures around the globe and the analytical methods, techniques, and theories that archaeologists use to facilitate their study. Designed to develop anthropological, historical, and geographical perspectives in archaeological research, UNCG’s archaeology curriculum encompasses prehistoric and early historic cultures.
Our faculty is actively involved in research and/or fieldwork in Africa, the Mediterranean region, West Asia, the Middle East, North America, South America, and West Asia. Students participate in these or other field work projects in addition to meeting classroom requirements.

Graduates of the program are prepared for advanced training in archaeology and museum studies; cultural resource management; team leading in a variety of settings; and other professions for which critical thinking and good communication skills are necessary.
