Since 1891, the languages and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome have been a part of the UNCG curriculum.

We are the largest undergraduate classical studies program in North Carolina.

Envision the future by unlocking the past

A group of students and instructors from the Classical Studies department at UNCG gathered in front of the Colosseum at night.
Three students sit on the ground with a measured archaeological dig site between them and tools like shovels and brushes all around.

Ancient Mediterranean Studies & Archaeology (previously known as Classical Studies) at UNC Greensboro offers a complete array of undergraduate courses in Greek, Latin, classical civilization, and archaeology. Students can concentrate in any of these areas to earn a degree. We also offer study abroad opportunities through our UNCG in Rome program and an archaeological field school in Greece.

By studying the ancient Mediterranean, you develop an advanced ability to communicate and think critically, while receiving excellent preparation for graduate entrance exams for medical, law, and other professional programs.

In Dr. Robyn Le Blanc’s “Archaeology of Roman Daily Life” class, students took a hands-on journey through history at the School of Art’s foundry, casting ancient Roman coins using traditional methods. 🔨💰 By pouring melted metal into molds, they brought history to life and gained a deeper understanding of the daily practices and craftsmanship of the past.
